| Description: | Dan Williams is a retired butcher who has worked in almost all of the local Williamsburg grocery stores over his sixty year career. He discusses his history including his early life growing up in South Carolina and his ideas about being a Southerner. He talks about his first impressions of Williamsburg when he moved to the area in 1948 and his memories of the first grocery stores. He worked at Pender’s Grocery on Duke of Gloucester Street and later owned the West End Market from 1966-1975. He has also worked at numerous grocery stores up until he retired in the early 2000’s. He discusses the changing nature of grocery stores and the changing role of butchers in modern supermarkets. Mr. Williams gives an interesting perspective on the changes that have occurred in the grocery industry through his experience working in the meat industry for over 60 years. |
