My Dear Sir: Edwd K. Collins Esq. informs me that a consul is about being appointed to Santa Iago de Cuba. He is desirous that James J. Wright, whom he recommends as a man of character, capacity, and responsibility, should obtain the situation. Mr. Collins is one of our first merchants, an active opponent of the Van Buren faction, and a man of great energy of character. I should think it advisable if possible to gratify him. I am not yet prepared and to speak definitely respecting the Appraisonship. I have from Ulster County that Cornelius D. Sohommaker, said to have been a delegate to our national Convention, applies to be appointed Post Master at Brunswick in that County in the place of Charles Bauer; and that Matthew J. Duyo, present deputy, applies for a similar appointment in the place of C. G. Graham at Shawasunk in the same county. The recommendations of their persons have been presented to P. O. Dept. The near approach of the election produces great excitement. Crowds are gathered in the public places discussing the news from [?]: It seems to be highly favourable. It is impossible to speak with certainty respecting our local candidates, but I have not a shadow of doubt that the [?] [?] will go with [?] hands over majorities on the gen'l tickets. I shall rejoice heartily when the election is over, that I may have a leisure moment to devote to private business. Our love to Julia, their letter to whom I have just deposited in the Post Office. Very Respectfully & sincerely, Alex Gardiner New York, Nov 2nd, 1844 His Excellency John Tyler
