31 March '45 My dear Alexander I was in N York on Sunday but had too much business on hand to come and see you. Those [?] English is in a chart about his [?]. I think it [?] pathetic that his paper must succeed. My finances are in such condition that just not it is impossible for me to render him that assistance which otherwise I would most cheerfully accord to him. He informed me that he needed about a hundred dollars for a month or two. He wishes to get this & the next and & then there will be no difficulty in his way. I wish you to call & see him & if it lies in your power to aid him to do so. I will stand his security in the matter. I have an [?] [?] of the President which [?] offers in his paper.
