I was recently employed in my professional capacity as attorney at law as private counsel in a prosecution for assault & battery [?] by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania against two persons John & Nicholas Costello. The assault & battery was committed upon the person of Anna Maria Costello the wife of Cornelius Costello. When the case came in for trial, the Commonwealth vs. Nicholas & John Costello, the Commonwealth at my instance called the wife as a witness in the case - & the defendants called the husband. I understand that your legal attainments have [?] you to know that Mr. Cornelius Costello, the husband could not in such a case be a witness for the Defense & you once accused me on the [?] in a very public way of ignorance in this particular. I then, if you remember, attempted to explain the affair to you supposing the purpose then had come from misrepresentation of the facts of the

I understand that the interest you entertain in this matter to prove my incapacity in my profession has induced you to commit [?] in Philadelphia as to the point, and to publish it abroad in Bristol that such counsel has sustained you in the [?] which your eminent legal abilities & acquiescence have indeed occasiond you to indulge in my case.
