Plattsburg July 28. 1817 Dear Sir I arrived here on Saturday the 26th., after visiting the work now in train at Rouse’s Point, within 200 yards of the boundary. I found Genl. Brown here. We are just setting out for Sacketts [harbor] by Ogdensburg, which, as the roads are bad, we should not reach in less than five days. I saw the house, at the boundary, ½ of which is in Canada, & the other in the UStates. The public sentiment holds in abhorrence, such proceedings & I have no doubt, that with suitable aid from Congress, the practice may be suppressed. I shall hasten as rapidly as possible, to the termination of my tour, & to the seat of government. I shall write you more at leisure from Sacketts Harbour – very respectfully & sincerely I am dear sir yours James Monroe
