Abstract: Relates efforts by Jefferson to withdraw Short's assets from the latter's bank, which had failed; Jefferson assures Short that he will be repaid by the bank; shares his eagerness about retiring on October 1; admits he has no idea who will succeed him or what the prospects are for Short's future diplomatic employment; informs him that Jefferson is considering "tenanting" the land in Virginia.
