Abstract: Reports that many in Amsterdam attribute the city's alleged decline to its commerce with America and that country's recent independence; worries about the implications of that sentiment; comments on the curiosities (including an aloe vera plant, a church organ, ship models, and a copy of the first book printed by Laurens Koster) that can be found in Leiden and Haarlem.
