William Stephens Smith; Jefferson's return letter to Smith in care of Mr. William Carmichael; Jefferson left Mr. Thomas Barclay at Bordeaux; Jefferson bets Thomas Barclay a bottle of burgundy that Jefferson will reach Paris before Barclay; hopes to be in Paris by the 11th because neither Mr. Burrill Cairnes and Mr. Zachariah Loreilhe are present; enclosed letter from Jefferson's daughter Martha about her recovery from illness; Jefferson wants to hear about her health soon; Jefferson inquires about the health of his servant, Espagnol; Jefferson worries that Espagnol may feel neglected because Jefferson carried another servant with him during his trip. en_US
