Too engaged while at Poplar Forest to answer his letter of 21st from that place; Advises his son to apply directly to Postmaster General who alone has power of appointing deputies; His father [Peter Jefferson] moved to this country in 1753 and was after a year or so succeeded as surveyor by John Dawson with John Staples as deputy; Surveyors' books and papers were not burnt in house [Shadwell]; they were safe in Bryan's time, as he has seen books of Col. Fry and Doctor Cabell who were among the first surveyors after county was taken from Goochland. |
