Abstract: | Corrects William Short on Jefferson's "influence in the foreign affairs;" the government may decide to limit the term of ministers abroad to seven years; suggests that Short return to the United States before he becomes too attached to Europe; suggests that Short run for office when he returns; if Short were in Virginia now, he could take William Grayson's place in the United States Senate, but James Monroe will take the position; Short could take the place of Richard Henry Lee in the United States Senate in two years, one of the best jobs in Jefferson's opinion; not sure what Short's business in Amsterdam will do for him; does not know what to do about Jean Francois de Tolozan and Monsieur de Sequeville until he speaks with President George Washington; instructs Short not to pay any more rent to the landlords of Jefferson's house in Paris after the six months from which he gave his notice. |
