Letter, 1804 March 20, New Madrid, [Missouri] to [Thomas Jefferson], n.p.

Abstract: Before commanding New Madrid, wrote to Jefferson in 1798 regarding the origins, customs and industry of American Indians but believes Jefferson never received his letters; Jefferson sent letter of recommendation to self through Captains [William] Clark and [Meriwether] Lewis; M. Lassus, Lieutenant Governor of Upper Louisiana obtained a copy of the recommendation and sent it to the Spanish government hoping to implicate self; regrets not meeting Jefferson's nephew, Captain Luis, as he would have offered Lewis his services.
