Thanks him for essay proposing an uniform orthography for Indian languages; wishes it could become commencement of uniform orthography for world; had not known of petition from Salem about duty on books; about four years ago attempted a repeal of that duty, without effect; last report of Senate on subject does not seem favorable. |
