Abstract: | Informs Short of the controversy in the Senate surrounding the approval of the nominated ambassadors: Thomas Pinckney's appointment to England was vetoed, Gouverneur Morris' nomination narrowly passed, and Short's bid for the post at the Hague was approved; Jefferson warns Short against accepting the position, though, because the funding for it is unlikely to be approved; instead Jefferson recommends Short accept a special diplomatic mission to Spain that the President is prepared to offer him. |
