dc.description.abstract |
Turns to Jefferson for help in his misfortunes; recognizes Jefferson as a philanthropist, republican, patron of the arts, and a friend of France; he seeks employment suited to his education and meager talents and hopes to promote better relations between France and the United States by serving as a French teacher in Philadelphia; he hopes the introductions he brings will help him procure twenty or thirty students to instruct for three to four hours a day; money earned from this work will also allow him to pursue his own studies. |
