Has received Russell- Greaves' letters; the winter has been very cold in France, but Nice has been fine; suggests that Russell-Greaves will prefer Naples to Rome because of his health; encloses a letter of recommendation to Mr. Stephen (Etienne) Cathalan, Jr. who is the agent in Marseilles; Jefferson knows no one in Naples but does have a friend from Naples in Paris with whom he will send letters; suggests that Russell-Greaves join William Short and John Rutledge, Jr. in Naples; there is no recent news from America; eleven states have ratified the Constitution; hopes to hear from Russell-Greaves soon, particularly about his health; Jefferson plans to return to America in April and will be in Boston later in the year. |
