Eager to know Jefferson's expectations for the tobacco trade and the French purchasing contracts next year; they are keeping prices high on what they have stored because they hear that the farmers-general will demand very low prices for it; believes that fixed prices, especially if tied to the quality of the tobacco, will benefit the seller, who could always sell it to someone else willing to pay more; the French usually get inferior tobacco, regardless of price. |
