dc.description.abstract Jefferson is pleased that Short has seen his granddaughter Ellen, who is "of a good heart, good temper, a sound head"; volume of correspondence keeps him "chained to his writing table" for long periods of time each day and leaves him unable to write his memoirs; he will not consider running for public office again, choosing to "leave...to those who are to come after me the pursuit of what is right." en_US
