Is writing history of U.S. and biography of eminent citizens; asks if any country or considerable island was uninhabited by human beings at the time of its discovery; asks for a copy of Jefferson's pamphlet "A Summary View of the Rights of British America," 1774; has copy of Vol. 1 of Hening's Statutes up to 1660; did Hening continue the work and in how many volumes; has written three chapters; hopes to have first column ready within a year; is in no hurry to publish; encloses a pamphlet [lacking] upon the opposition of the Congregational and Presbyterian clergy of New England to the general government; it was published in a leading journal; East is endangered by Hartford convention now in session; object is dismemberment which will injure the south but ruin the north. |
