Prefers undertaking voyage at his expense in order to act more freely; asks for 3600 pounds in advance; asks for letters of introduction for negotiations in Illinois and with Indian chiefs; all geographic observations and information will be communicated to the Philosophical Society; other discoveries in natural history will be for his immediate profit and for the general good; will not undertake voyage until after ordering his affairs in Carolina and the reception of letters from Charleston. |
