Cash Box

Elvis Presley? Check. Aretha Franklin? Check. The Bee Gees? You bet. The Andrews Sisters? Yes, indeed. Stories on all of these singers and thousands more--famous and not so famous, rising stars and fading meteors--can be found in Cash Box, a weekly magazine published from 1942 through 1996 for the music and coin-operated machine industries in the U.S.

An alternative to Billboard Magazine, Cash Box published regional chart data as well as charts by genre including country and R&B music. It featured news of tours, insider gossip, album summaries, and photographs found nowhere else. Cash Box is an invaluable source for the study of music, the music industry, and popular culture in the second half of the twentieth century. It will be a boon to researchers in not just music but also American studies, history, Africana studies, women's studies, and literary and cultural studies.

The Earl Gregg Swem Library at the College of William and Mary acquired the publishers' own set of Cash Box and the publishers’ copyright. An anonymous donor funded half the purchase price.

Digitization Grant for Cash Box Awarded

Digitizing Over Fifty Years of Jukebox Music News: Cash Box, 1942-1996

Earl Gregg Swem Library is pleased to announce that its entire run of Cash Box, the most complete set of issues in existence, is in the process of being digitized and will be made accessible freely online through the Library’s website and the Internet Archive. This effort is being made possible through a generous grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) as part of its new program, Digitizing Hidden Special Collections and Archives. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is funding the Digitizing Hidden Collections program.

The print issues of Cash Box are unavailable during digitization, 2016 – early 2017. Follow W&M Libraries News for announcements on release dates of the digital issues.
