The following manuscript note appears to have been entered in Apr.: "This day which promises the greatest Happiness may perhaps prove the most unfortunate of my Life. Propitious Heaven confirm my hopes! At present there is no Circumstance to pall the Joy which my Heart anticipates -- May no untoward Event destroy the Blessings which this seemingly auspicious Day presents to my wishes -- Confirm my Hopes ye Powers who preside of the Actions of Mankind." [We may infer a connection to his Sept. 1778 wedding to Frances Bland Randolph.] |
