Description: | Box 1: Item 2012.076. Alexandre Guichard Chansonnier (Songbook), circa 1794-1795. Manuscript chansonnier (songbook), circa 1794-1795, kept by Alexandre Guichard of Stenay, Alsace, France, containing lyrics to 188 French songs. The date given on the first page is "An 3 de la Republique," the 3rd year of the French Republic, which began on 22 Sept. 1794, following the Reign of Terror. The chansonnier includes the lyrics but not the actual music for the songs, but always notes the tune to which it is sung. An alphabetical index can be found at the end. The seller notes that many of these songs are drawn from contemporary operas and comedies. "Ariette de Philippe et Georgette is perhaps from the comedy of the same name by Jacques-Marie Boutet de Monvel; Romance de l'amitié à l'épreuve is from an opera comique by Andre Grety and the Romance d'Estelle is derived from Florian's roman pastoral Estelle. Most however cannot be so easily identified." "There is a darkly humerous La Guillotine à la Mode [...] and Les Adieux du general Hoche à sa femme (Hoche was arrested during the Terror of 1794, ten days after his marriage); along with a 3-stanza Rêve d'un Nègre. Many are bawdy or mildly erotic, such as Le petit Voyage autour de ma Maitresse and Les Souvenirs d'une Vieille Coquette." Extent: 1 vol., 206 pp., 22 cm x 15 cm |
