Description: A letter from St. Leger Landon Carter, to Dr. Beverley R. Wellford, regarding his personal medical bill as well as the medicines provided to his slave, Pleasant. St. Leger Landon Carter, n.p., to Dr. Beverley R. Wellford, Fredericksburg, Va., send payment for account and in humourous manner, questions the medical bill. "My stomach has been a pillbox for 20 years, but I have no recollection of taking 300 at a time." Also questions treatment of slaves: "I find that you gave Pleasants 200 somethings (I wish they had been lashes) and subjected her to the jackscrew..."
