Diary of William Coe, a minister from the Shenandoah Valley, from 29 May 1862 to 13 August 1862. He writes about the Seven Days and Cedar Mountain battles and shifts in area from Confederate to Union control and about slavery - specifically his slave who marries a free woman, the death and burial of a slave who was his servant's mother, and more. May 29th, 1862: "This is not a diary or record of the events of the war...but a series of rests-occasional settlements of my feelings and heart promptings..." Later entry: "the fierce bloody battles near Richmond have been fought for 8 successive days. Blood! blood! blood!" |
