dcterms.description A photograph album created by William Bailey Weightman featuring mostly pictures of reconstruction work conducted by members of the American Friends Service Committee throughout Europe after World War I. Weightman and his brother, John, were draftsmen in Los Angeles when they collectively joined the foreign service to assist with reconstruction efforts. The album features more than 1,100 photographs from the United States and throughout Europe. Features of the album include headquarters of the agriculture department at Chatel Chehery showing missionaries several with Society identification, German prisoners, work at Varrenes, destroyed towns within France, trenches, General Pershing and Haig at the inter-allied parade on July 14, 1919, and many destroyed British, French and German tanks. There are also photographs of travel including Venice and Pisa in Italy, Sebastopol, Constantinople, and Russia. United States photos of interest include a Pueblo village and scenes from New York City including the Statue of Liberty. Included with the photographs is a signed six month contract with the American Red Cross for William to be a chauffeur-mechanic in Sebastopol and a certificate from the Red Cross thanking Weightman for his service.
